Interracial Couples

When researching and observing the United States society through movies, television, internet, and personal experience there has been a particular pattern with the views people have on interracial couples. There are many movies that portray interracial couples to be a negative action in society. I read a couple other blogs about interracial dating and couples and one popped out in my head called “Why white men love the black women,” posted by James (http://www.interracialdatingcentral.com/blog/why-white-men-love-the-black-woman.htm). In his blog he had a ton of valid points. Within his blog he tried to create a debate with commenter’s and it seemed to work. Even reading the comments showed how interracial couples and dating is sometimes not accepted. The paragraph that I found to have the most impact was, “So what about stereotypes like “black women are either sexually conservative or total sluts?” Many people give so much lip service to interracial dating. You would think they have never done it. But those uptight individuals are the ones that spread these stereotypes. What happened to the highly educated black woman? How about the caring, decent and involved black woman?” this is so extremely true and its sad that Americans have stooped so low to make stereotypes to the extreme of a woman being a slut, or conservative no in between. In my Comparative Ethnic Studies class we had a whole class period to debate and discuss the stereotypes given to every ethnicity. Everyone got extremely into it and were blurting out their views and it seemed like everyone in the class wished we should get rid of all the stereotypes… if everyone wants to get rid of the stereotypes then why are they still here?

There are many things in today’s world that are making interracial couples and marriages look like a negative contribution to our society. There are many real life situations and movies about interracial couples. A movie that is the most stand out in my mind of an interracial couple is “Save the Last Dance.” In the movie Derek an African American male and Sara a Caucasian female fall in love, but it’s not as easy for them as it sounds. They have to deal with all the family views and peers views on them being together. This isn’t right in my eyes, anyone should be able to love whoever they want without being looked down upon or hated for being in an interracial relationship. In this movie Sara goes to an all black school as a new student and is not accepted because of her race and looks. Derek’s sister is who is nice to her and becomes her friend and helps her to transform into a new girl, attitude, and looks. When she falls in love with Derek all the girls at school hate her because they think she as a white girl is coming into their school taking their good looking smart men. This situation shouldn’t be seen in this view as Sara taking their good men from them, it could go either way. The African American women could take the smart good looking white man and start a relationship.
